Wood element (Mệnh Mộc): character, Nạp Âm types and lucky colours
Wood is the tree pushing up through the soil and the fresh growth of spring. In Vietnamese it is called Mộc, and people whose birth year falls under Wood in the Nạp Âm system are "mệnh Mộc". Everyone born in the same lunar year (counted from Tết) shares the same Mệnh. Below we look at the Wood character, the six kinds of tree in the Nạp Âm, how Wood relates to the other elements, and easy ways to work with it day to day.
The Wood character
Wood people are warm and caring. They are genuinely happy when others succeed and find it hard to walk past someone who is struggling. Like a tree reaching for the sun, they always want to grow a little more, so learning, teaching and nurturing feel meaningful to them. They plan for the long term and put down roots slowly, and once they start something they rarely let it go. On the other hand, they find it hard to say no, take on too much and wear themselves out, and when they are sure they are right they can be surprisingly stubborn. Trees grow better after pruning, and so do Wood people when they let a few tasks go.
The six Wood Nạp Âm
Wood has six Nạp Âm, each a different tree. Đại Lâm Mộc, Wood of the Great Forest (1928, 1929, 1988, 1989), is generous, and people naturally gather around it. Dương Liễu Mộc, Willow Wood (1942, 1943, 2002, 2003), is soft and sensitive and knows how to bend with circumstances. Tùng Bách Mộc, Pine and Cypress Wood (1950, 1951, 2010, 2011), stays green in winter and gets stronger when times are hard. Bình Địa Mộc, Flatland Wood (1958, 1959, 2018, 2019), is modest and grows steadily. Tang Đố Mộc, Mulberry Wood (1972, 1973), is the tree that feeds silkworms: practical and quick to look after others. Thạch Lựu Mộc, Pomegranate Wood (1980, 1981), bears fruit even in poor soil, so success may come later but tastes sweet.
Who supports Wood, and whom Wood supports
In the generating cycle, Water feeds Wood and Wood feeds Fire. A Water person can be a source of ideas and calm for a Wood person, while Wood people are often the ones quietly helping Fire friends shine. In the controlling cycle, Metal cuts Wood and Wood draws nutrients from Earth. A Metal person may be the frank adviser who helps you stop spreading yourself thin; with an Earth person you may lean on them or ask for a lot without noticing, so say thank you often. The site's zodiac match takes this into account, but always together with the zodiac sign and the heavenly stem, never the element alone.
Lucky colours and simple ways to balance
The colour of Wood is green. Black and blue, the colours of Water, which nourishes Wood, also work well. Wood belongs to the east and to spring. The simplest way to balance it is to keep a small plant on your desk and water it every morning. Walking under trees, using wooden things or a few green items around you also helps. There is no need to avoid white and silver, the colours of Metal. Colours and objects are just small reminders to look after your mood, so enjoy them without pressure.
Wood in your daily fortune
The daily fortune compares the Nạp Âm element of the day with your Mệnh element to set a base score. For Wood, a Water day is a supported day and scores highest, followed by a Wood day. An Earth day is a take-charge day when money luck rises the most. A Fire day is a giving day: good for self-expression and love, but tiring. A Metal day is a slow-down day with a lower overall score, though work can still score well because responsibility is higher. Your lucky element is shown as Water, your lucky number alternates between 1 and 6, and Metal is the element to go easy on.
A word for Wood people
You water everyone else's garden; remember to water your own. Drop one task today and you will grow a little taller tomorrow. Enter your birthday to see what kind of day today is for you.
