Earth element (Mệnh Thổ): character, Nạp Âm types and lucky colours
Earth is the soil that receives and nourishes everything, and the energy that links one season to the next. In Vietnamese it is Thổ, and people whose birth year falls under Earth in the Nạp Âm system are "mệnh Thổ". Everyone born in the same lunar year (counted from Tết) shares the same Mệnh. This article covers the Earth character, the six kinds of earth in the Nạp Âm, how Earth relates to the other elements, and down-to-earth ways to balance it.
The Earth character
Earth people are reliable, patient and sincere. They build trust through actions rather than words, and once they take something on they quietly see it through. Because they are hard to rattle, friends come to them with worries or ask them to sort things out when a group cannot agree. They are practical and careful with money and the household. Their weak spots are adapting slowly to change and carrying other people's loads until worry builds up inside. Sometimes simply saying "could you help me?" is how the soil stays rich.
The six Earth Nạp Âm
Earth has six Nạp Âm, each a different kind of ground. Lộ Bàng Thổ, Roadside Earth (1930, 1931, 1990, 1991), is humble and supports other people's journeys. Thành Đầu Thổ, City Wall Earth (1938, 1939, 1998, 1999), is good at protecting and building order. Ốc Thượng Thổ, Rooftop Earth (1946, 1947, 2006, 2007), is like a roof over family and community. Bích Thượng Thổ, Earth on the Wall (1960, 1961, 2020, 2021), reliably does its part within a group. Đại Trạch Thổ, Great Post-station Earth (1968, 1969), is wide ground where travellers meet, and is good at connecting people. Sa Trung Thổ, Earth in the Sand (1976, 1977), is light and adapts easily. Do not mix up Sa Trung Thổ with Sa Trung Kim: they belong to different elements.
Who supports Earth, and whom Earth supports
In the generating cycle, Fire burns to ash that becomes Earth, and Metal forms inside Earth. A Fire person often brings passion and energy to an Earth person, while Earth people quietly give Metal friends solid ground to stand on. In the controlling cycle, Wood roots into Earth and draws out its nutrients, and Earth dams Water. A Wood person may tire you by pushing for change, yet that is often what gets stalled matters moving. With a Water person, avoid setting too many rules; leave them room to flow and the relationship becomes much easier.
Lucky colours and simple ways to balance
The colours of Earth are yellow and brown. Red and purple, the colours of Fire, which produces Earth, are also a good match. Earth belongs to the centre and to the turning points between seasons. The easiest way to balance it is to touch the ground: repot a plant, use ceramic bowls, or walk barefoot on the grass in a park. Beige or camel clothes are an easy choice too. There is no need to avoid green, the colour of Wood. Feeling at ease is the best balance.
Earth in your daily fortune
The daily fortune compares the Nạp Âm element of the day with your Mệnh element to set a base score. For Earth, a Fire day is a supported day and scores highest, followed by an Earth day. A Water day is a take-charge day when money luck rises the most. A Metal day is a giving day: good for self-expression and love, but pace yourself. A Wood day is a slow-down day with a lower overall score, though work can still score well as responsibilities grow. Your lucky element is shown as Fire, your lucky number alternates between 2 and 7, and Wood is the element to go easy on.
