Water element (Mệnh Thủy): character, Nạp Âm types and lucky colours
Water is the flowing stream and the quiet gathering of strength that belongs to winter. In Vietnamese it is Thủy, and people whose birth year falls under Water in the Nạp Âm system are "mệnh Thủy". Everyone born in the same lunar year (counted from Tết) shares the same Mệnh. This article covers the Water character, the six kinds of water in the Nạp Âm, how Water relates to the other elements, and gentle ways to balance it every day.
The Water character
Water people are flexible and easy to talk to. Just as water takes the shape of its container, they naturally adjust their words and manner to the person in front of them, so they settle in quickly anywhere. Their intuition is strong; they often pick up on what others have not said and are good at calming things down when tension rises. The risk is that, by fitting in with everyone, they lose track of what they actually want, or let things drift instead of deciding. Their moods can rise and fall like waves, so time alone to reset is important.
The six Water Nạp Âm
Water has six Nạp Âm, each a different kind of water. Giản Hạ Thủy, Stream Water (1936, 1937, 1996, 1997), is the brook in the valley: quiet, clear and supportive behind the scenes. Tuyền Trung Thủy, Spring Water (1944, 1945, 2004, 2005), is clean and never runs out of ideas. Trường Lưu Thủy, Long River Water (1952, 1953, 2012, 2013), takes the long view and keeps going. Thiên Hà Thủy, Milky Way Water (1966, 1967, 2026, 2027), is water from the sky that falls as rain: idealistic and generous. Đại Khê Thủy, Great Stream Water (1974, 1975), runs fast and strong, active and good with change. Đại Hải Thủy, Great Sea Water (1982, 1983), is the ocean: broad-minded with big ambitions.
Who supports Water, and whom Water supports
In the generating cycle, Metal produces Water (the old image is dew forming on cold metal) and Water nourishes Wood. A Metal person often gives a Water person structure and direction, while Water people pour their energy into helping Wood friends grow. In the controlling cycle, Earth dams Water and Water puts out Fire. An Earth person may feel restrictive because they ask for rules and deadlines, but that is often how things get finished. With a Fire person, a cool remark from you can land harder than you expect, so turn up the warmth a little.
Lucky colours and simple ways to balance
The colours of Water are black and blue. White and silver, the colours of Metal, which produces Water, are also a good match. Water belongs to the north and to winter. To balance it, start simply: drink enough water, and now and then walk by a river, lake or the sea. Navy clothes, glassware or wave patterns are easy choices too. There is no need to avoid yellow or brown, the colours of Earth. These are only small ways to refresh your mood.
Water in your daily fortune
The daily fortune compares the Nạp Âm element of the day with your Mệnh element to set a base score. For Water, a Metal day is a supported day and scores highest, followed by a Water day. A Fire day is a take-charge day when money luck rises the most. A Wood day is a giving day: good for expressing yourself and for love, but draining. An Earth day is a slow-down day with a lower overall score, though work can still score well as responsibilities grow. Your lucky element is shown as Metal, your lucky number alternates between 4 and 9, and Earth is the element to go easy on.
A word for Water people
Going with the flow is a gift, but water only becomes a river when it picks a direction. Today, decide one thing your way. Enter your birthday to see today's energy for you.
