How zodiac matches work: trios, pairs and clashes
What is a zodiac match?
A zodiac match (Hợp tuổi / Xung tuổi in Vietnamese) compares two people's birth-year signs, stems and elements to see how well they fit. In Vietnam it is checked for weddings and business partnerships, and even when choosing the first guest to enter the house at Lunar New Year (xông đất). The Vietnamese zodiac has the Cat instead of the Rabbit and the Buffalo instead of the Ox.

A harmony trio is a group of three signs facing the same way; working together goes smoothly.

Friction: clashes and harms
Clashing signs sit opposite each other and bump into each other easily; harms are prone to small misunderstandings. Still, friction can push both people to grow.

Beyond the signs, the stems and Nạp Âm elements are compared. The combining stem pairs are Jia–Ji, Yi–Geng, Bing–Xin, Ding–Ren and Wu–Gui. Supporting elements lift each other up; controlling ones fill each other's gaps.
