What xông đất is and when it happens
Xông đất means the first visitor who enters a home after giao thừa, the midnight that separates the old lunar year from the new one. Folk belief says this person's energy carries into the family's health, work and harmony for the year ahead, so the first visit is planned with some care. Vietnam's Tết in 2027 falls on 6 February, so the first-footing moment is just after midnight on the night of 5 to 6 February 2027. Visitors usually come right after midnight or early on the first morning, and shop owners treat the first customer of the year, the mở hàng, in much the same way. The head of the household is called the gia chủ, and a visitor's birth year that suits the gia chủ is called a good tuổi xông đất.
